This style of chair is known as the "official's hat chair" because the projections over the rear stiles resemble the … more This style of chair is known as the "official's hat chair" because the projections over the rear stiles resemble the knobs on the black hats once worn by high-ranking administrators in Ming Dynasty. These chairs are high back and handcrafted and structured with wooden pegs and tenon structure, which is the very traditional craftsmanship for furniture making in ancient China. Intricate carvings of traditional Chinese design motifs decorate the back splats of the chairs. Both arms and back splats of the chairs are crafted with deep curves. The front openings underneath the seats are uniquely carved into an "arch" shape. Made from elmwood, the chairs are very solid and kept in excellent condition. Original patina and wear.
