France, late nineteenth century, early twentieth century france late eight hundred period early twentieth century author copy from jean-baptiste carpeaux (1827-1875) was a french sculptor and painter. Son of a bricklayer, his first artistic formation took place under the guidance of françois rude, from which the energetic momentum derived. Subsequently carpeaux enrolled in the école des beaux-arts ('school of fine arts'), where he assimilated the cold academism of duret in 1844 and won the prix de rome ten years later, and therefore he was able to move to rome in search of inspiration, given who studied michelangelo's works, donatello and verrocchio. His roman stay, from 1854 to 1861, allowed him to deepen both his artistic knowledge and to develop a taste of spontaneity, which he managed to weld with the principles of baroque art. Carpeaux soon began to take a cue for his subjects with common life, breaking with the classical tradition and approaching a realistic style. During his roman stay carpeaux created both works of romantic taste, as in the case of ugolino and his children, and a plastic version of the fisherman with the shell, inspired by a theme already examined previously by rude. [2] refects multiple versions of the same work in the following years, for example, the one exhibited at the salon of 1863. Once returned to paris, the sympathies of napoleon iii managed to captivate, despite some friction with colleagues and the public. This was precisely the best creative moment of the artist, driven by his sinuous and velvety modeling, and in fact the high -relief of flora, depicting the goddess surrounded by putti inside a cave of flowers, and the dance for the facade of the opéra (1869), with its sculptural complex they highlighted an excellent inspiring vein. His following works were a complex depicting the various parts of the world that raise the celestial sphere for the observatory fountain, the sculptural work (antoine watteau) created for its city of origin and the complex of psyche that disarm love. Carpeaux reached fame also for numerous busts portrayed by a fervent realism, among which the one commissioned by napoleon iii for princess matilde, the baroness sipière and mademoiselles fiocre were counted. Among his students can be mentioned: jules dalou, jean-louis forain and the american sculptor olin levi warner. He died at the age of 48 at courbevoie, was first buried in paris in the cemetery of auteuil, then his remains were buried and transferred to the saint-rocch cemetery to valenciennes source fisherman model with conchinry bronze materials and marble dimensions h 30/ 40 cm l 15 cm ca perfect condition.
