(Over the centuries weaving techniques have not changed significantly, according to Kuba Textiles & Design by E. Bennett and N. Batulukisi. Their book explains that Kuba motifs are primarily abstract. The Kuba culture flourished in what is now Congo, Central Africa, and their artisanal embroidery and patchwork techniques are handmade by women while men weave the textiles from the raffia palm tree. Patchwork cloths, according to Bennett and Batulukisi, are the most complex of the Kuba textiles. Their book makes it explicit that, the Bakuba people textiles and their appliqués are reminiscent of workings by 19th and 20th century master like Matisse and Picasso. European and American collectors are not discouraged by lack of Provenance/dates.)
