Painter born in Biel in 1882. He is the son of a watchmaker, Johann Josef. He spent a year at the Cantonal School of Solothurn, then his family moved to Geneva. He apprenticed in an architect's office and at the same time took drawing lessons at the École des beaux-arts in Geneva. He attended the National School of Fine Arts in Paris and worked in various architectural offices. Thanks to a scholarship he returned to Paris and produced his first paintings in 1908. He was friends with Alexandre Blanchet who produced his bust. He made many trips to France, Italy, Greece, Spain. He creates frescoes at the University Hospitals of Geneva and at the Cantonal School of Solothurn; as well as lithographs for Charles Ferdinand Ramuz's novel, La Grande Peur dans la montagne (Lausanne: Mermod, 1945). He also does the portrait of Ramuz. From 1910 to 1951 he regularly participated in Swiss national exhibitions. In 1914 he married Emilia Meier von Winkel.
