Grueby Pottery is considered the most collectible and desirable of pottery's, and for that reason it is difficult to find, and the prices have gone to astronomical levels. In 1897, Gruby introduced its first Matte Green glaze, and it became the rage of the art pottery world. It was called Grueby green, and shades of cucumber and watermelon. Every pottery maker tried to imitate it. Some tried sandblasting, others chemical or acid washing, and firing techniques. Grubey's name became synonymous with the Matte green glaze when he received one silver and two gold medals at the exposition universelle de Paris in 1900. By 1906, there were over a dozen makers of matte Green. Other awards for Grueby quickly followed. In 1901 the company received a gold medal in St. Petersburg, Russia. That same year Grubey pottery was on display with Gustav Stickley furniture at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. In 1904 the pottery received the grand prize at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis as well as the highest award in Torino, Italy. Grueby's Matte glazed pottery became a symbol of the arts and crafts movement. It was sold throughout the United States and Europe by Gustav Stickley, Tiffany and Co., and Marshall Fields. Grueby tiles were used in many important installations. Some of the most visible ones are in the New York subway stations located at Astor Place, Bleeker St., and 28th St., on the Lexington Avenue line, built in 1904, and at Columbus Circle, on the Broadway-7th Avenue line.
This is an exquisite all original Gruby tile architectural piece. We believe it would look incredible as a backsplash or fireplace surround. These tiles belong in the original Craftsman/arts and craft style home. These tiles are well over 100 years old and it is so rare to see decorative scene tiles surface. In this set you get a total of 12. Nothing completes an amazing Grueby surround like the watermelon colored "Grueby green" tiles. These green tiles along with the crackled texture tan tiles compliment each other wonderfully. less
