The self-taught artist Julius Bissier was introduced to East Asian art by the sinologist Ernst Grosse which had an ongoing impact on his work in a stylistic technical manner as well as in a spiritual respect. Besides landscape ink paintings in a Far Eastern technique, since the 1920s, Bissier also developed paintings in the style of New Objectivity. The late work of the 1950s was predominantly dedicated to abstract miniatures in tempera technique. As a consequence of the works retrospective, shown by the “Kestner-Gesellschaft” in Hannover in 1958, Bissier’s works reached international renown and received several awards, among them the “Großer Kunstpreis” of North Rhine-Westphalia. less
