Description: On a flat, broad round base with scale pattern and vignettes with stylized dolphins standing conical candle shaft in the … more On a flat, broad round base with scale pattern and vignettes with stylized dolphins standing conical candle shaft in the form of Trajan's column. Around the wall of the shaft is a very finely chased relief frieze consisting of pairs of griffins holding a lyre with their paws alternating with classicist leaf ornaments. Capitellar candleholder with cymation, acanthus and godron decorations, removable wax plate with beaded rim. Very fine chasing, excellent matte and bright gilding. The well-balanced proportions, the excellent workmanship as well as the stylistic peculiarities suggest that the pair of candlesticks was made in one of the important Parisian workshops, e.g. by P.-P. Thomire, C. Galle or A. Ravrio. Condition: very good, min. signs of age and use, min. abrasion. less
