Snow is not easy to paint, and it is even harder to do a "snow" job inside a glass bottle that has been frosted by a treatment of acid. The frosted surface makes it easier for the paint to stick. The theme of this bottle is a snowscape. It is a done in a modern concept and not adhering to the traditions of Chinese landscape painting. Even though there is a background and foreground, the lines created by the slopes lead the eye to the center with a figure about to descend on the snowy steps. On the other side of the bottle, the scene conveys the same silent solitary view of a figure trying to cross a bridge. The painting is expertly done and successful accomplish the task of making a winter landscape. If the artist was trying to convey a lonely, solitary atmosphere in a wintry setting, such a mood he did truly succeed.
The glass bottle is a flattened oblong shape slightly tapering towards the base ending in a small raised oval foot. The opening is flat. It is matched with a green stone cap.
Date: it is dated to 丙寅 year of the Chinese Cyclical dates. The complete inscription reads "painted in the winter month of the 丙寅 year." According to the Western calendar, the year can be 1926 or 60 years later in 1986. The 1986 is more likely.
