Tompion was known as the "Father of English Clockmaking" for his achievements within the world of scientific instruments.
This clock movement and dial are by Thomas Tompion and were created during the late 17th century. The case, however was a later addition, built in 1844.
The clock was owned by one family and had been passed down since its creation.
The last owners of the clock were the Jackson family of Fort Worth, Texas. They know that it had come through their maternal line and had been brought to America during the mid 1800s by their ancestor, a Dr. E. E. W. (Ives?).
Inside the clock is a newspaper clipping from the 1950s with a photo of the clock as well as details of its origins.
The Jackson family informed us that the original casing burned in a fire and thus a new, high quality case was custom built in 1844.
The clock has been well kept. The new casing features lovely birds eye maple wood and a single center spire.
The movement has been well kept as well. It ran and chimed when tested. This movement features an 8 day time and strike as well as a calendar function. There are also several other minor functions unique to Tompion's work.
This movement is stamped as number 346 on the reverse. The dial is signed on the lower.
Chairish sells clocks solely to be intended for display. The mechanical elements are not guaranteed to be in working order by Chairish less
