An oval Hollywood Regency gilt sheaf of wheat coffee or side table with a glass top. This cocktail table features a rectangular base with four faux bamboo gilt legs. The base has four stretchers which are also in gold faux bamboo. At the center, the gilt gold base features tall pieces of sculptural metal crafted to look like sheaves of wheat. The "spike" (or ear or head as they are called) on the top of each sheaf features beautifully crafted leaf-like pieces.
Affixed to one of the leaves, is a metal tag that is printed, "Made In Italy".
This piece is unique, as most "sheaf of wheat" tables we have come across are round and much smaller. This table is wide and has plenty of room to hold cocktails in a family room or living room
In the style of Baguès or Robert Goossens. This highly coveted occasional table was first made classic by Coco Chanel in her 31 Rue Cambon apartment in Paris. This table is nearly identical aside from the shape. Similar pieces have also been created for Yves St. Laurent in the 1970s.
Gabrielle Chanel was a woman of many passions and just as many good-luck charms. The designer was particularly fond of sheaves of wheat—not only because they’re a universal symbol of prosperity, but because they also symbolize harvest time, which coincided with her birth date, August 19. In France, wheat is a symbol of prosperity and wealth. And therefore would be a wonderful piece to add glamour (and luck!) to any room as a coffee table or side table. This timeless piece will light up any room.
Karl Lagerfield paid homage to Chanel by using wheat sheaves in his Spring/Summer 2010 collection.
It is rumored that Salvador Dali gifted Coco Chanel with the one in her Paris apartment.
