Antique portal clock
France
Marble, bronze, enamel
Dated around 1800
Dimensions: H x B x D: 46 x 28 x 14 cm
Description:
Antique portal clock made of polished black marble with fire-gilded applications.
On bell-feet standing pedestal with front mounted palmettefries in flat relief.
Four up-to-tapering columns with artfully designed capitals carry the roof of the portal in which the clockwork is mounted.
The roof itself is highly curved up and decorated with rosettes as well as fruit and ranking.
Below the dial there is a broken-up remedy as a typical design element of the Directoire.
The clockwork is a French pending mill with eight days of gear. The sun pendulum is temporally hung on a thread and also the lock washer with punch on bell at half and full hour is typical of the late 18th and early 19th century.
The enameled dial with black Roman numerals is signed: "Schmit à Paris"
Condition:
The movement runs absolutely reliable and smooth.
The upper application has a expertly repaired break, which is not visible from the front. There are two slight bumps of the marble on the back at the top. On one of the photos this is easy to recognize.
Fine hairline cracks and a minimal outbreak in the range of 10 o'clock.
The watchmaker Schmit à Paris is detected in the literature:
Brian Loomes - Watchmakers and ClockMakers of the World p. 691
