A superb advertising public house window pane. This heavy glass pane came from a public house “the boot & slipper” made for advertising holder’s midland brewery ales, mounted in a heavy oak frame, would have hung in the bar as an advertising piece. C1880
the story, like so many movers and shakers of the victorian town, started not in birmingham, but at the foot of the cotswold hills. It was in 1801 that henry holder was born in the gloucestershire village of bishop’s cleeve. As a young man, the son of a farmer moved north to birmingham.
holder’s brewery ltd, midland brewery, nova scotia street, birmingham, west midlands, was founded in 1869 by henry holder. In 1875, holder's son, j c (later sir john) holder took over the company. Holder's brewery had over 200 pubs which were acquired by mitchells & butlers ltd in 1919 and then sadly the brewery was closed in 1923, the year that sir john holder died.
this glass advertising pane is in excellent condition, a heavy piece that would make a great display or as a window panel, already has the wall fittings arched. A lovely piece of advertising history. This piece has an attribution mark,
i am sure that it is completely authentic and take full responsibility for any authenticity
