After his secondary education he studied at the Polytechnic School in Delft. He graduated consecutively in 1882 as a civil engineer and in 1885 as a structural engineer. His interest in glass painting was aroused by the teachers Eugen Gugel and Adolf le Comte at the polytechnic school. In 1889 Schouten founded his own glass workshop on Schoolstraat in Delft. From 1891 to 1937, this stained glass studio 't Prinsenhof was located in the Prinsenhof in Delft. He managed to connect designers and glaziers such as Herman Veldhuis, Dirk Boode and Lucas Knoll to this studio. In 1900 his work was awarded a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris.
