Description: This hand-carved wooden table-top sculpture of a black rhinoceros is chip-carved in a realistic manner with understanding of the animal's … more This hand-carved wooden table-top sculpture of a black rhinoceros is chip-carved in a realistic manner with understanding of the animal's spirit and activity, and with expert attention to detail. It is from central Africa, where the range of this now scarce animal has been greatly reduced due to loss of habitat and poaching. The figure is unsigned, but it is evident that the artist had first-hand experience with living black rhinoceroses. It was made circa 1960-1975 and has a mellow brown patina obtained with age and with camel-colored wood showing through areas for emphasis and with normal wear. less
