Created in Japan during the 19th century, this woodblock print showcases an outdoor scene depicting a white haired woman walking in the woods. Coming from the right, she is heading towards a grouping of trees whose dark leaves, partially hidden by a calligraphy insert, provide a perfect contrast to the lights tones of the rest of the composition. The process of woodblock printing would start with an artist’s drawing that would be transferred from paper to a cherry-wood block, which was carved and then inked, before blank sheets of paper were laid on top.
