James Swann (American, 1905-1985) etching, pencil signed and titled “Waiting”. Etching measures 9.5 x 7.5 , 14.5 x 12.5 total with frame. Non-Glare glass, Excellent condition.
On Back of Frame hand written-as best as I can decipher:
“From Navajo Reservation, Tuckerman, Arizona
1953 Shop Prize Composition, NYC
J.Swann, 400 Webster Ave, Chicago, Illonois”
History: Mr. Swann`s work is represented in such museums as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian Institution. His awards included a bronze medal from the French government for his pencil drawing in the Paris Exposition, 1937; the Habersham prize, 1939, by the Southern Print Makers; and the 1953 Henry B. Shope Prize given in New York by the Society of American Etchers.
“Swann Acres.” The address of 400 Webster Avenue is mentioned in the Joseph Czestochowski book “James Swann In Quest of a Printmaker.”
