Hand-painted and gilded Japanese Kutani ware (porcelain) hair receiver bowl and lid. Geometric polychrome design motifs are anchored by a miniature landscape and a geisha scene. Excellent condition, no chips or cracks.
Hair receivers were common on the dressing tables of women from the Victorian era through the 1950s. They were used to collect hair from hair brushes for a variety of purposes--making hair art, filling pincushions or other small pillows, or for creating elaborate hair styles.
This piece is likely from the Meiji Period in Japan. It was acquired new in the late 1890s or early 1900s by the seller's grandmother. less
