A gorgeous turquoise blue Majolica jardiniere made by the French manufactory Sarreguemines circa 1880-1890. The jardiniere is decorated in the eclectic Japonisme-style with beautifully hand-painted birds among pine branches, faux cloisonne, and cobalt blue elephant handles.
Though originally developed and popularized in England, Majolica had a far-reaching influence on ceramicists throughout the world, with wares appearing in the United States and the Continent during the late nineteenth century. This jardiniere, made by the French manufactory Sarreguemines in 1880-1890, displays the exoticizing and eclectic Japonisme style that became popular in the West at the end of the century. The Sarreguemines jardiniere’s style and colors share a similar language with its English counterparts, revealing that the French were undergoing something of a majolique manie themselves.
