The early 20th century French secretaire was made of walnut.
Called secretaire en abbatant by the French, in reference to the sloping-front drop-down desk surface, this particular example features the classic leather writing mat in glorious relief on the main panel. . Below is the cabinet that houses four small drawers on the sides.
Four crossed X-shaped legs provide support.
The desk surface opens up to reveal no fewer than four small drawers inside.
Much more space efficient than a regular desk, certainly more beautiful than most, but just as practical to use!
