Usually this large, confident animal is associated with anger, fighting and strength. However (in my opinion) this painting shows the complete opposite - there is almost an element of vulnerability and trepidation. Bulls have always been known as the sign of strength, vitality and vigour. I grew up on a farm with a guard bull. We even had a name for it - Zumma. I have scary and fun memories of playing hide and seek with the gentle giant across an orchard on a hill. Sometimes, the things that you are scared of are also the things you are attracted to- the morbid curiosity. That is the story with the bull drawings. I identify with the bull for its energy and the rawness.
This mixed media (ink and charcoal) on canvas drawing is part of a series set to be exhibited in Dallas, Texas at The Other Art Fair by Saatchi in May 2022. I have always wanted to (and one day will) create a life-sized bull. less
