Patricia M. Sprouls, an important American artist (1921-2011). One of the first women admitted to the Salmagundi Club in New York City, the oldest and most prestigious art club in the United States. She painted this work in the year of the Bicentennial as a tribute to the The Harmon Van Dien House (a rare example of Dutch sandstone architecture) located in Paramus, New Jersey.
This house was built in 1811 and was added to The National Register of Historic Places on January 10, 1983.
This particular piece of art is colourful and vibrant, the figures in front of the house are beautifully attired - the whole scene is just lovely. A very competently painted picture.
The title lower left reads "The Zabriskie with Van Dien Smoke House, Paramus NJ 1976". Afixed to the verso is her art biography. Below is an excerpt from her obituary.
Patricia was born in the Bronx, New York City. Moved to the Isle of Capri with mother and sister at the age of eight. This was for reasons of health for Patricia. She spoke four languages as a young child. English, Spanish at home and German and Italian while in Italy. Still highly fluent in Italian in her later years. She bean her lifetime fine art career under tutelage of her mother. Won a four year full scholarship to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Naples Italy. Where one year she was awarded "Best Foreign Art Student" of all Italy. She and her sister and mother were forced to spend WWII in Italy never giving up their love of their country and the hope of returning to it. They survived bombing their apartment by American night bombers by running for the air raid shelter as the bomb hit. Returning to the U.S. in 1947 and marrying in 1948 she raised her family and continued her art career. She exhibited in New Jersey and New York City. Became president of the NJ chapter of the American Artists Professional League, member of the board of the national organization. Also a member of the board of the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club. And she was on of the first women to become a member of the Salmagundi Club, the oldest art club in the U.S. She exhibited in many national shows and many 1-person shows in the metropolitan area. Moving to Norris in 1987 she continued her art with the local art groups. Winning "Best in Show" one year in the Dogwood Art Festival.
