This striking Italian patinated bronze is known as The Dying Gaul or Gladiator. It is a 19th copy of an ancient Roman lost Hellenistic sculpture thought to have been first executed in marble. The original may have been commissioned sometime between 230 and 220 BC by Attalus I of Pergamon to celebrate his victory over the Galatians, the Celtic or Gaulish people of parts of Anatolia. The identity of the sculptor of the original is unknown, but it has been suggested that Epigonus, court sculptor of the Attalid dynasty of Pergamon, may have been the creator.*
Raised by an oval shaped terrain designed base, the fallen gladiator wears a neck torque and is laying on his side leaning on his arm. His broken horn and sword are at his side. This large scale enables the viewer to appreciate the wonderful proportions and attention to detail.
Lord Byron commemoratied the statue in his poem "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage." less
