A very unique early pewter inkwell
Unusual form with a tray, which was possibly meant to hold the quill pens, and a raised stand with two cups for the ink, or one for the ink and the other for the quills or the sand
The cups holder stands on six turned columns
The whole inkstand rests on four bun feet
It is very intriguing, because it obviously bore multiple inscription and/or markings that have been intentionally removed back in time. On the top some minor etched details remain, suggesting possible initials and / or dating. There are signs that markings were scratched out at at least 5 places on top and 6 at the underside
It is quite a mystery why this was necessary. We may guess that it could've been English, and the markings removed by the early American patriots, or it could've been stolen and made unrecognizable
Anyway, a really RARE and unique curiosity item with interesting history
There are scratched numbers 1746 6 / MRL/ 1466, most likely collector's inventory number
