The mark burned into the wood is Woodcraft Monkeypod, of Hawaii. The old name for the wood is Monkeypod, in current times it's referred to as acacia. It's been absolutely drenched in food safe mineral oil recondition it. It was drenched twice then buffed clean with a soft cloth. This is how you waterproof and condition raw wood like this. It is NOT sealed with polyurethane nor should it be. It's treated the same way that you should care for butcher block, which makes it easy to clean and care for with easy hand washing in regular dish soap. This would be an excellent bowl for a chip and dip display- particularly for salsa and chips. less
