Previously re-glued, refinished, and reupholstered. Any prior damage was repaired. One chair is missing a small piece of the at the corner brace which is specifically photographed. Always a question of how far to take restoration work. We believe in making the items beautiful and usable without completely erasing its age. See the photos for further details. less

Beautiful set of 8 American Pressed Back Carving oak chairs. The arch topped backs have nice pressed carving details as well as pressing towards the bottom of the backs. Lovely turned wood accents.
These are original antique chairs. from about 1900. The set was assembled over time. May have been two separate sets of 4 or 1 set of 4 and then 2 other pairs were found. Since they were manufactured at slightly different years, there are minor differences in sizes. 4 of the chairs have been upholstered over the cane seat bottoms.
Height is about 39 1/8. Width is about 16 1/2 inch. Depth is about 18 1/2. Seat height is about 19 inch at the upholstered seats and 17 3/4 at the cane bottoms.
They have been completely professionally restored. Re-gluing involved taking each chair completely apart and using a resin glue in the reassembly process. No short-cuts were used. The refinishing was done by hand stripping and hand sanding. The stain was an oil base stain (this puts moisture back into the wood but requires more additional drying time than solvent based stains.) Next a series of sealers and lacquers were applied with hand sanding between the layers. The final coat is a durable bar-top lacquer. Chairs are require some of the most labor intensive restoration of any antique items.
You can see the many years of honest wear and use that occurred before restoration. However, we chose to leave these details that are part of the character that makes antiques special.
Extremely beautiful and very well made items. less
