A rare pair of spice tins made by the S. A. Ilsley and Co., one of the earliest premier tin makers in the U.S. They are well known for their tin work and lithography. An early 20th c. advertisement stated they were "Manufacturers of plain and Japaned tin cans and canisters for coffee, tea, spices, crackers, oils, paints, dough etc." The salesroom was located at 173 Pearl Street, NYC.
The tins are labeled for Ground Mace and for Rape Seed. Each has a painted picture at front. The Mace has a picture of a boy while the Rape Seed has a picture of a girl.
