About the exhibition:
Mapping the history —complex and fragmented— of geometric abstraction in Latin America, to show the renewal and differentiated character of its inventions and constructions with respect to European geometric abstraction is the purpose of the exhibition "Cold America. Geometric abstraction in Latin America (1934-1973)". Painting, photography, sculpture and architecture are represented in the almost 300 pieces –some of them never seen outside their countries of origin– by more than 60 artists from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Uruguay, Venezuela and Mexico. The sample covers a time span defined by two return trips from Europe to America: 1934, when Joaquín Torres-García returns to Montevideo, and 1973, the year of the return of the Venezuelan Jesús Rafael Soto for the inauguration of his museum in his hometown , Bolivar City.
Behind this exhibition is the greatest effort ever made to bring together the most select pieces from museums and private collections in Europe, the United States and Latin America in order to offer the European public the first panoramic view —if not exhaustive, but complete and historically rigorous— of American abstract currents. The exhibition is a project of the Juan March Foundation, which has had Osbel Suárez as guest curator, and in which some of the most renowned artists and art connoisseurs in Latin America have participated —such as Ferreira Gullar, César Paternosto, Luis Pérez Oramas , Gabriel Pérez Barreiro, María Amalia García or Michael Nungesser, among others.
The exhibition reflects a Latin America diverse from the usual stereotype: in the face of its cliché and hasty identification with the extreme temperature of spontaneity and the native with the Tropics and the Caribbean, the work of these artists is an index of a "cold" America, objective, geometric and rational, from which a fascinating and surprising abstraction results. less
