Antique 19th c. French bronze bust of President George Washington after Houdon. Small size for the desk. Measures 3 3/4" tall x 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" front to back. Good condition with pleasing patina. Signed on the back: "Sculp. Mecous Alle Collas".
Achille Collas (1795–1859) was a French engineer, inventor, writer and engraver who developed a way of mechanically creating engravings after medallions and other reliefs, and a machine to copy sculptures at a smaller scale. The so-called "réduction méchanique" popularized small sculptures and has been credited with being almost entirely responsible for "the transformation of the bronze industry".
