This uniquely-shaped hand painted earthenware beauty is something I picked up many, many years ago at an auction. Inspired by Qianlong period pottery, it was made between 1960/1970, most likely from Macau. There is an apocryphal mark on the underside. It is important to understand that an apocryphally marked item (made later than the era stated), does not render the item either a fake or valueless. In essence, they are items made in homage to the great era of Chinese porcelain making, in this case the Qianlong period. Of note, previous owner(s), it appears, used the box as a planter. When I acquired it, I cleaned and scrubbed it meticulously so that I could use it as a décor accent but because earthenware is porous, the interior rims remain a bit dark, which does not impact its beauty or utility (see interior photos). In overall excellent condition and looking for a new home, yours perhaps? It measures 8” x 4½” x 3” W/D/H; interior 7” x 3½” x 2” W/D/H; weight 1 lb. 12 oz.; handcrafted from highly glazed earthenware; hand painted—white background with a melodic array of colors that includes a luminous saffron yellow, royal blue, crimson red and leaf green. With its highly unusual shape and cheerful colors, it’s a perfect accent piece for a collector of boxes or a fabulous gift for someone who is!
