This is a rare two-volume bound as one edition. … more First Edition, 2nd Printing of Leo Tolstoy's masterwork, War & Peace
This is a rare two-volume bound as one edition. As stated in "A Note From The Publisher,"-" The text of this translation, as it is printed in these volumes, is available in no other edition except the six-volume edition distributed in 1938 to the Members of The Limited Edition Club. It was for the members of that Club that Louise and Aylmer Maude made this extensive revision of their earlier translation, and Mr. Maude corrected the proofs carefully just before his death in 1938." This edition contains a special introduction by them; it is illustrated with reproductions of the Famous 19th Century paintings by Vassily Verestchagin and numerous pen drawings made for this special edition by Fritz Eichenberg.
Bound in publisher's red cloth with lithograph on front board. The spine is stiff w/silver lettering.
Each of the two volumes in this edition is separated by cardboard announcing the title and the Volume.
Volume 1 has 815 pgs, and Volume 2 has 857 pgs.
The pages are yellowed from age but in very good condition; the spine is stiff.
