Venezuelan cartoonist-artist born in 1929.
Between 1945 and 1947 he studied at the Crisbal Rojas School of Plastic Arts, and his participation in the Free Art Workshop of Caracas (1948) was also notable. At the beginning of the fifties he moved to Rome where he met and instructed with Renatto Guttuso , adhering to social realism and in 1952 he moved to Paris where he studied mural painting and lithography at the School of Fine Arts. In 1956 he returned to Venezuela and in the company of authors such as Jacobo Borges and Luis Guevara Moreno defined the philosophical and aesthetic perspectives of the social figurative movement. In addition to this, he is the founder of the School of Plastic Arts of the Universidad de los Andes.. In addition to his work as a painter, he has stood out as a caricaturist and illustrator in various periodicals.
In 1955 he represented Venezuela at the III Sao Paulo Biennial and when he returned to Venezuela in 1957 he joined the dissidence against the dictatorship of Marcos Peréz Jimenez. She represented Venezuela at the Venice Biennale in 1958 and 1980. In 1972 she participated in the Latin American Plastic Encounter at the Casa de las Américas, in Havana , Cuba. [ 2 ] In 1986 he participated in the Festival of Plastic Arts in Baghdad, Iraq and in 1987 he toured to show Spoken Portraits of the Liberator in countries such as Suriname, Guyana, Jamaica, Curaçao, Aruba and Haiti.
In addition, his illustrations in books such as Of Certain Creole Animals and The Cardinal Points and Juan de Cumarebo by Josefina Urdaneta are famous. In 1992 he edited Orinoco, ironic and dreamlike , edited by the National Academy of History. For his artistic and caricature work, he has received multiple awards both in Venezuela and internationally.
