Launched in 1958, the … more A replica of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald built by Harry Carle in 1992 encased under lucite. Launched in 1958, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest ship on the Great Lakes, known for setting cargo records and earning the nickname "Mighty Fitz." For 17 years, she hauled iron ore across the lakes, becoming a favorite among boat watchers for her size and record-breaking performance. Tragically, on November 10, 1975, she sank during a severe storm on Lake Superior, claiming the lives of all 29 crew members. The cause of the sinking remains a mystery, and it inspired Gordon Lightfoot’s song, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. less
