The ultimate shabby chic cottage cotton quilt blanket or throw, American handmade circa 1930-50. Features many many different cotton prints, some likely feedsack fabric, pieced together geometrically to form a zig zag or zipper pattern. Gingham checks, stripes, florals, abstracts, plaids, and several unique motifs (ducks, paper clips, buttons, etc.) all mix together in the top, and the borders and back are neutral cotton muslin. The top print pieces have all been meticulously blindstitched together by hand, so just imagine the time this took to create!
The top is joined to the muslin border and back with hand machine stitching. Sandwiched between these outer layers is a lightweight cotton blanket in gray and white, possibly overshot weave, that was simply repurposed to be the internal "padding" of this quilt. You can just see the edge of it at the side border seams. Interestingly, we note that there is no stitching that quilts through the layers on this piece other than around the outside perimeter border.
Excellent condition with no weak fabric, no weak stitching, and only a few faint spots seen on the muslin on the back of the quilt. See photos. A one of a kind textile with so much history and charm! Shown laid fully open covering the top of a queen bed, as well as folded across the foot. If used on a double or twin, this would fall over the sides more like a bedspread.
