The view is of the Cape Neddick Lighthouse from the mainland. The light is on Nubble Island in York, Maine. Some of the ancilatory buildings have been removed since this work was painted. The pyramidal structure to the left and its connector to the lighthouse tower are now gone. It is signed on the lower right 'Chirone' and inscribed verso 'Nubble Light, Cape Neddick, Maine'.
The artist, Elsie Chirone (1908 Canada - 2000 USA) resided on Boston's North Shore most of her married life. Her maiden name is unknown. It is unclear whether she exhibited during her lifetime or was simply an inspired and talented amatuer. We met the artist when she presented the work to a mutual friend in 1969/70. less
