Today "Made in China" is not an unusual label to see on items purchased in the USA, but back in the early 20th century, there was only one thing that Americans coveted from China - Chinese sewing baskets. The baskets were imported to the US by the thousands between 1880 and 1930. Adorned with exotic decorations like colorful beads, glass bangles, silk tassels and coins, they could be found proudly displayed in American homes and usually held women's sewing supplies.
Most of the baskets came from the Guangdong province in southern China, near Canton (today's Guangzhou). The sewing baskets were made especially for export. Today they are still highly prized for their unique style and presence. less
