These academic drawings of the nude, called académies, were the basic building block of academic education, as it was practiced in france in the 19th century. They were executed in the studio, where a live model poses. This type of exercise allowed future artists to study anatomy. Along with drawing from plaster casts of classical sculptures, drawing from life, after a live model, was a traditional exercise of academic pedagogy. 1 - academy of a standing man, three-quarters view, signed and dated upper right: v. Geoffroy 1896. Numbered 28/3. 2 - academy of a man holding a stick behind his back, signed and dated upper right: v. Geoffroy (partially erased) 2 /2 96. 3 - academy of man leaning against a stick, neither signed nor dated. 4 - academy of man holding a stick, signed and dated upper right: v. Geoffroy 1895 november 9. These drawings were executed by v. Geoffroy between 1895 and 1899. Three of them are signed and dated. One drawing is numbered. The 4 drawings are part of a set of 15 drawings executed between 1895 and 1899. They include académies drawn from live model and from plaster casts of antiquity and italian renaissance sculptures. Most of these drawings are male nudes. All of them (except the academy of man leaning against a stick) are scrupulously signed and dated. The dimensions may vary slightly according to the drawings.
