Beautifully burnished blackware seed pot with an elegant shoulder that blends up to a pentagon-shaped lip. Made and signed by renowned Native American potter Clara Suazo of the Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico. Bought directly from the artist about around 1977.
Clara Suazo also signs her pots as Clara Swazo or Clara Chavarria. She has been actively potting since about 1935. She is the daughter of Geronimo Chavarria an important family of the centuries-old Santa Clara traditional potting and relation to the esteemed Tafoya family. She is also the wife of Florencio Suazo from another family of a long line of traditional Santa Clara potters. less
