The Duplex stool is part of the collection of the Vitra Design Museu, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Barcelona Design Museum.
The Duplex stool was born in the interior design project of the Duplex Bar in Valencia in 1980. An object that appears with its bright colors, like something out of a comic book. Mariscal breaks the stereotype of a stool and dispenses with one of the four legs with a line and movement game.
The presentation of this design opens the doors to collaboration with Memphis in Italy.
This new edition has been directed by the artist and revises some elements of the original design to reaffirms the timelessness of the piece.
The maverick Spanish designer Javier Mariscal - famous the world over for Cobi, the cartoon dog who became the official mascot of the Barcelona Olympics. Described as "kooky" and "colorful", Mariscal is perversely versatile: a pioneering furniture designer, artist, photographer, and graphic designer who also worked on corporate identities.
Mariscal has exhibited at Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, and participates in the Kassel Documentary, to which several retrospectives and up like: Mariscal Drawing Life in the London Design Museum, Mariscal en La Pedrera, or The Art Player in Korea. Illustrations and comics strips invade covers and pages in the New Yorker, El Pais, and the Japanese magazine Apo.
His trips to California, Japan, Paris, or Portugal decisively influence his drawings. He works with designers, engineers, and architects such as Arata Isozaki and with companies like Memphis, Akaba, Bidasoa, BD Ediciones de Diseño, Moroso, Alessi, Nani Marquina, Magis.
Mariscal wins the "Premio Nacional de Diseño" in 1999 and a Goya Award for “Chico & Rita” the animated film alongside Fernando Trueba. For which they are also nominated to the Oscars for Best Animated Picture.
