Antonio Scialoja, better known as Toti Scialoja, was an Italian painter and poet and was one of the figures most representative of the Roman school of Italian abstract art. Scialoja demonstrated his artistic versatility early on and had his first personal exhibition in Genoa in 1940. The 1950's saw a definite turning point in Scialoja's art, abandoning the expressionist and cubist forms in favor of an informal abstract style. Scialoja took part in the Biennale of Venice in 1964 and held a personal exhibition at the Marlborough Gallery in 1966. During the 1970's Scialoja went through a prolonged period of reflection and resumed work with vigour and inspiration in 1982 until his death in 1998. It would appear that this new direction resulted from an influence of Goya's paintings in the Prado Gallery. Scialoja is also remembered for his activities as teacher and director of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma which many big names in Italian Contemporary Art have been studying in such as Mario Ceroli, Pino Pascali and Yannis Kounellis.
