Fernando canovas (buenos aires, 1960) surely the argentine, french native artist, fernando canovas has a curious life: his father had the hobby to taste and develop a uno-personal flying machine. His utopian project influenced his sons’ first series of paintings which he entitled “view from above”. After abandoning different university studies, he decided to embark for europe. Canovas arrived in paris in 1983, where he studied at école des beaux arts under the direction of pierre alechinsky. Here he frequently met with the artist roberto matta, a great source of inspiration and artistic speeches. His discussions with matta, at the origin of his choice of three-dimensional space in his paintings, an option which he does not always respect but is not, however, ready to give up. He won the “prix fortabat” for latin american artists residing in europe. In argentina, he was selected and presented by jorge glusberg (who wrote the essay for his monograph canovas 1985-1995, ed. Climats) at several exhibitions at c.ay.c. And the museo nacional de bellas artes in buenos aires. This same museum in dec. 1997-jan. 1998 organized a large-scale chronological – retrospective exhibit of the last thirteen years of his work. A 200 page book, fernando canovas containing essays by fernando castro, josé jimenez ,and jorge glusberg and fabio magalles, was published by the generalitat valenciana to accompany the show. The “canovas 13 anos” exhibition traveled to sao-paolo, brazil where it inaugurated the “memorial da america latinas” a new exhibition space dedicated to latin american art. After brazil, the show traveled to valencia, spain and then belgium. He has held solo shows in prestigious galleries all over europe, argentina, and the us.
