Carpet in natural knotted wool with symmetrical knot, handicraft production of North Africa.
The design of this rug reproduces a late Roman (Coptic) fabric. The drawing refers to very ancient concepts. This is the model of an ancient concept of the world. The medallion marks the ''center'', a metaphysical center. By placing himself ''at the center'', man manages to relate to the higher world, source of light, life and order. The center is indicated by the sun at the zenith, which here takes the form of a node without beginning or end. The space instead is indicated by the four cardinal points and the space-time by the signaling of the four corners of the world. In each corner, knots without beginning or end mark the four suns, which represent the directions of the sun at dawn and at sunset in the equinoxes and summer. (J.Thompson - Introduction to the Oriental rug - Allemandi 1987 - Pag. 154-155).
