Bench designed by pierre jeanneret circa 1955, relaunched in 2020. Manufactured by cassina in italy. Cassina continues its study of the furniture of the city of chandigarh and adds the kanga-roo low armchair to the hommage à pierre jeanneret collection; a collection that stands out for its essential forms and simple materials, a balance between modern european ide-als and traditional indian spirit. This low chair, made for the city’s general hospital hall but also present in many private houses, is characterised by the "z" shape of its sides, made up of a sequence of three vaguely triangular coplanar elements placed in continuity. The seat and backrest feature typical weaving inside the wooden frame. An optional cushion is available for added protection and comfort. These product is a tribute to pierre jeanneret, a key figure in the realization of chandigarh. His experience in india lasted until the end of his days in 1967. His close and continuous contact with the local territory led him to combine essential forms with simple materials to create a meeting point between modern european ideals and the traditional indian spirit. The chandigarh project is considered le corbusier’s most mature work that summarises his poetics, technique and ideology, consistent with his will to research and contribute to the culture of architecture and design. Together, the pair pioneered a new aesthetic vocabulary that placed function and order over embellishment—jeanneret’s work imbuing the strict geometry of modernism with energetic diagonals and lighter materials like cane and wood. A consistent innovator, he collaborated with charlotte perriand on experiments in aluminum and wood, and developed prefabricated housing with jean prouvé. In the early 1950s jeanneret joined his cousin in chandigarh, india, where they embarked on a massive urban-planning project, laying out the city and designing low-cost buildings and furniture. Though corbusier abandoned the project halfway through, jeanneret remained for 15 years as the project’s chief architect. The city remains a masterpiece of the modern vision. About the manufacturer: in a continuing dialogue between past, present, and future, cassina has created the i maestri collection, revisiting furnishing designs by the twentieth century’s best-known architects, including le corbusier, pierre jeanneret, charlotte perriand, charles rennie mackintosh, gerrit thomas rietveld, franco albini, frank lloyd wright and marco zanuso. While the designs and functional concepts have been precisely preserved, the models have been manufactured using evolved technology. This is also the company that has manufactured iconic pieces of contemporary design from the 50’s to the present day, ideated by some of the most important international designers. Today cassina continues to look to the future of design with audacious, passionate curiosity and an open, holistic approach. It affirms its exclusive ability to furnish a home’s living and dining spaces completely and iconically with the cassina perspective: a concept, a philosophy, an informed, futuristic thought.
