Monumental triptychs mirror, Jesse Visser Dimensions: 165 x 230 x 5 cm Polished stainless steel, dimmable led light Jesse Visser presents imposing monumental limited editions: triptychs – of which the largest is 1.65 meters high and 2.30 meters wide – that resemble autonomous art pieces but turn out to be functional lighting designs. The huge narrative works suggest triptychs with wood-painted panels from a medieval church but are contemporary and daring statements of solid high-polished brass and stainless-steel plates. Triptychs are used in the traditional sense to tell a story. This work, with the Latin title ‘Cogitatio inanis’ (best translated as ‘thoughtless mind’), is only about emptiness, re?ection and material. Behind the folding shutters lie re?ective panels with a round circular light or, in the other version, two tube lights that shed and re?ect an atmospheric light. In his search for new production techniques and innovative materials, Visser has developed a preference for tactile materials in which the processing of the surface plays a role. Similar to the anodisation of aluminium, stainless steel and brass are made high-gloss in collaboration with specialized companies. In addition to this intensive finishing technique, detailing in Visser’s work is just as important. For example, for this modern triptych, the designer developed solid turned hinges of brass or stain- less steel with which the hatches can be opened. According to the designer, the functional lighting artwork is not finished until a user performs the required action: the opening and closing of the shutters. Jesse Visser’s work has been exhibited in, among others; Milan, New York, Cologne, London, Frankfurt, Tallin, and in the Netherlands. Jesse Visser enjoys various collaborations with labels, craftsmen, product developers, industry- and other creative thinkers. A part of his designs are created in partnership with designer brands or as custom pieces for architects. On his own initiative he creates in-house productions and special limited edition pieces. The labels Visser works for are predominantly focussing on furniture and lighting design. He is strongly involved by the process of product-development. Searching for new production techniques, innovative materials, fnding the best solution that will bring the product to a higher level. He challenges himself to break down a product to its essence and then built it up with as few resources as possible, which result in functional high end pieces. His products are often conceptual but always functional, clear and clever detailed. Apart from being a designer, he is art director of ‘Brothers and Sons’ and works as a lecturer at ‘Utrecht School of the Arts’ in The Netherlands. During his career, Jesse Visser has been rewarded with several international awards and recognitions for his work as well as taking part in numerous exhibitions. The ‘best product’ award for the Alumni chair during Design District 2015, the third price Auroralia 2010 with the Cercle luminaire, the Designboom Competition (honourable mention 2005) with the project Doors and the 100% Rubber Design Award 2002 with the Bunker Table.
