Pair of vases in white opaline and shaped like inverted balusters. The mouths of the vases have large waves, and the sides are decorated with branches of roses that are tied at the bottom with a blue ribbon. Multi colored birds add vibrancy to the vases. A central medallion surrounded by arabesques painted in gold show 18th-century-style romantic scenes. Golden stripes highlight the neck and the base. A frieze of roses on a blue background encircles the neck. These vases are attributed to jean-françois robert, a painter of landscapes and hunting scenes at the sèvres?porcelain?factory between 1806 and 1843. He invented a new process for painting colors on glass that vitrified them by integrating them into the surface of the painted objects. His designs, borrowed from classical painters of flowers in the 19th century, are always executed with meticulous realism. From 1837-1855, robert ran the main workshop for decorating half-crystal opal. This workshop was based in sèvres near the royal factory. Maison launay, hautin & co., depositories of bercy, choisy, baccarat and saint louis, were all associated with robert, and he became their designer of choice. This association ended in 1855, when robert permanently retired at sixty-three years of age. Circa 1840 dimension: w 8.3 in x d 8.3in x h 23.6in. Dimension: l 21 cm x p 21 cm x h 60 cm.
