Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd was born in 1934, died in 2016. He was a Swedish painter and sculptor. He studied with Fernand Léger in Paris in 1951 and was professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm from 1965-1969. In 1974, he was visiting professor at the Minneapolis School of Art in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1986 he was awarded the Prince Eugen Medal for painting. Reuterswärd is known for its sculpture of a revolver tied in a knot, entitled No Violence, displayed outside the United Nations headquarters in New York. Versions of the work can also be viewed in Berlin, Stockholm and Gothenburg. In 1989, Reuterswärd suffered a stroke that forced him to switch hands from right to left. He described the time after the stroke in part as a form of liberation. He began to draw with his left hand, and the lines and motifs seem to point to the seeker both backward and forward in time, before and after the stroke. The monumental drawings with oil pastels from the late 1990s feature both mythological figures and acrobatic exercises. They are enigmatic and dreamlike, and while expression differs from the early conceptual exercises, they are also linked to the artist's constant exploration of new styles and approaches.
