A fabulous set of four mid-century “Niva” schnapps or cordial glasses designed by Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala c. 1960s for iittala. Wirkkala’s many designs were inspired by the natural beauty of his homeland, as we see in the name of this set. “Niva” is a Finnish word meaning “Strong flow of water”.
Designer and sculptor Tapio Wirkkala is seen as the leading figure in Finnish modern design. Professor Wirkkala designed several pieces that has become classics.
These are handmade/handblown glass. Handblown Glass has bubbles and irregularities which are characteristics of handblown glass. They are slightly different from one another but almost nearly identical but that’s with everything that’s hand blown/handmade/hand formed so nothing is going to be identical which makes each piece unique.
