Bursting with iconography, the impressive scale of this magnificent carved wooden panel would be sure to add a spectacular grandeur to any space. Depicting a biblical scene, this compelling piece tells a story, guiding our eye from left to right past powerful angels robed in armour, a female figure stabbed by a cross, and other motifs such as books and scales hinting at themes of justice. The captivating detail of this theatrical piece truly engrossed us in the action. This piece was created by joan palet and josep mundet, two prominent catalan artists who studied and worked at the famous llotja fine arts school of barcelona. Josep mundet i tarrés was a sculptor from torroella. During his early career, he taught at the barcelona school of arts la llotja , as well as holding a variety of individual and group exhibitions and commissions. In 1973, mundet made the monument in memory of monsignor viver on the passeig de l'esglesia in torroella, and in 1975 the monument of the sardana in fora portal. His work is highly personal and characterised by schematic, vigorous expressionism. If you wish for more details and links to the artist and his works, please don't hesitate to ask. Joan palet batiste was an extraordinary painter and draftsman, born in barcelona into a family of sculptors and woodcarvers. Also attending la llotja, palet was taught by the likes of ramon calsina, félix mestres and antoni vila arrufat. Please request further details if you would like to read more about the fascinating story of palet's tumultuous life and career through the civil war.
