- Designers Ran Amitai and Gilli Kuchik, the husband-and-wife-team behind Tel Aviv’s Bakery Studio, are quickly making a name for themselves on … more Designers Ran Amitai and Gilli Kuchik, the husband-and-wife-team behind Tel Aviv’s Bakery Studio, are quickly making a name for themselves on the international stage with experimental products that reinterpret traditional production processes. This unexpected piece—from their 2016 playfully named Futuristic Punk Red-Sea Creatures series—was achieved by reversing the standard order of industrial manufacturing.Instead of leaving manual, decorative work till the end of the process, the duo focused its handicraft efforts on the very first phase: mold making. In contrast to the conventional method of creating plaster molds, which is based on a predetermined model, molds were spontaneously processed by hand, using different drills specially designed for carving cavities in plaster. As a result, each mold is unique, and the pieces made from it are limited edition; when the mold wears out, the series ends.The series was inspired by the work of ceramicist Gdula Ogen, Amitai’s grandmother, who worked for many years in negative sculpting with sandbox molds and concrete casts. Futuristic Punk Red Sea Creatures was commissioned by Benyamini Contemporary Ceramics Center for the 2016 exhibition Matter of Fact, curated by Johnathan Hopp and Maya Ben David.The series includes multiple morphologies—each one signed and numbered.
