Simple and elegant California pottery ashtray from Heath ceramics by Edith Heath of Sausalito, California. Known as the "Safety Ashtray" it was designed by Heath, who cut slanted notches into a coupe shaped bowl, a solution to prevent lit objects from falling out. . They have an unglazed exterior and speckled interior. They are in very good vintage condition with incised Heath logo on underside, a teensy flea bite chip along the edge.
They have all the elegance of a Heath design, with its tapered notches and clean lines. These pieces can be used as a catch all, a sushi plate, or just as great tabletop decor. No smoking required! The timeless style of Heath's design shows in every single piece, even ashtrays. The factory in Sausalito where the pottery has been made for more than 50 years is still operating. Ashtrays are no longer in production.
