- Original ink and watercolor by Dean Abner entitled, “Les 2 Magots.” It is signed and dated 1948 on the lefthand … more Original ink and watercolor by Dean Abner entitled, “Les 2 Magots.” It is signed and dated 1948 on the lefthand corner and inscribed “to Glen Boles.” The piece depicts a man seated at a bistro table having coffee at the famous Parisian restaurant, Les Deux Magots. He is facing the ancient church, Eglise Saint-Germain-de-Pres. Dean Abner (1910-1982) was an American cartoonist whose work most often depicted human behavior in decaying urban settings or barren landscapes. He studied at the National Academy of Design and worked as a commercial illustrator for The New Yorker, Life, and Esquire magazine. His work for Life included illustrations of George Orwell's 1984 for a Life article on Orwell. Dean's vision expressed a darkness atypical of cartoon work of his time. He has begun to accumulate a posthumous cult following of admirers. 13.75" x 9.5" without frame. less
